Privacy
This page covers this website and the messages Oak Mountain Digital LLC sends to businesses about OpenTell, its research service, and what we keep when we do. SurveyRock, a survey platform run by the same company, has its own privacy policy at surveyrock.com/privacy.
This website
It sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from any other site. The company that hosts it records requests (the address a request came from, the time and the page) to run its service. We do not use those records to identify anyone.
Businesses we write to about OpenTell
Why you heard from us
We write to a business when our data is relevant to what it sells. We find the business through its own website. Each message is written and sent by hand, one at a time. An email goes to an address the business publishes for enquiries or sales, with a company greeting; we may instead send a LinkedIn connection request to one person at the business whose role fits the message (for example, partnerships or sales), found on LinkedIn. We send at most one follow-up, unless you reply.
What we keep
- The business: its name, its website, and the address we wrote to.
- What we sent, and when.
- Whether and when a message was opened, if it carried a tracking pixel (below).
- A LinkedIn request, and any reply to it, stay on LinkedIn; we copy nothing from LinkedIn into our records.
- Your reply, if you reply, as it arrives in our mailbox. A reply usually carries the sender's name and signature; we keep it as correspondence and for nothing else.
- If you ask us not to write again: the business's domain, the date, and that it asked. No name and no address.
What we never do
- Buy lists, guess or build addresses, or write to personal addresses.
- Use a data broker, people-search site or enrichment service. LinkedIn is the only place we look for a person, for a connection request, and what we see there stays there.
- Add you to OpenTell's data. That data is about organisations and does not record people. Nobody who corresponds with us is added to it.
- Sell or share what we hold.
Tracking pixels
Our messages to businesses in the United States may carry a tracking pixel: a tiny image that, when your email program loads it, tells us that the message was opened and when. Loading it also passes on what any image request does, such as the IP address it came from (and so a rough location) and the email program. We use it only to know whether a message was read, and keep that with the message. To avoid it, turn off automatic image loading; to stop our messages altogether, reply "no". Messages to businesses outside the United States carry none.
Why we may do this
Writing to a business, in its professional capacity, about a service that is relevant to it is a legitimate interest of ours. The message is short, infrequent and easy to stop, and it concerns the business, not your private life. Where a law asks for a legal basis, this is ours (for example, Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR).
Who else sees it
Our email provider, Fastmail, which holds our mailbox; for a message that carries a tracking pixel, the email-tracking service that runs it; and LinkedIn, for a connection request sent there. No one else.
How long we keep it
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| A message that got no reply, and any record of its being opened | 12 months after our last message, then deleted |
| A reply, or a conversation | While the conversation lasts, and 24 months after it ends |
| A request not to write again | As long as we write to anyone. Without it we could not keep the promise. It holds a domain, a date and the request, and nothing about a person |
To stop us, or to ask what we hold
Reply "no", or write to opentell@surveyrock.com. You do not need to give a reason. We stop at once and do not write to the business again, at any address.
You can also ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it or delete it, or object to our holding it. We answer within one month. If you ask us to delete everything, we delete the correspondence and keep only the request not to write again, which holds no personal data.
If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the data-protection authority where you live.
